RBMVE Biographical Note: Thorn L. Mayes, Sr. participated in the 1933 RBMVE as the Chief of Mapping and Survey. Leading a team of assistants, they surveyed the region to collect data which Mayes used to create a preliminary map of the study region. Mapping and survey teams in the five subsequent field seasons built on this map, expanding the area it covered.
Scope and Content: From the summary section of the finding aid listed above: “The Thorn Mayes photograph collection contains aerial views, 1934-1937, of the San Juan River drainage area, the Rio Grande watershed, and of the Navajo and Zuni Indian Reservations in New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah. This collection also includes an album of hand colored photographs of the southwest United States between 1962 and 1980.”

Container List or Summary of RBMVE-related Material:
Box 5, Folders 1-6 Material from “U.S.G.S. Expedition” in 1933. Though not reflected in the title, these photographs were verified as being from RBMVE, as they match photographs in other collections, as well as the year that Mayes is known to have been in the field with RBMVE.
