Hi, I’m Carter Smallcanyon, an aspiring Navajo artist. Throughout my life I’ve always been intrigued by the process of creation and getting results, so naturally I started trying to create things and art. As I’ve come into my teenage years, I have had the opportunity to spend time developing my skills and broadening the different mediums that I can work with. I have worked in virtual reality, digital illustration, digital animation, water color, acrylic paints, ceramic, wood carving, and bead work. I enjoy working with so many different mediums, because I can decide how to best create an idea. I tend to gravitate to art with a native or close connection to me, because it makes it seem extra special when I am able to share my results with people. Having done an internship with ONWARD, I’ve had the opportunity to get a feel as to what having a job centered around art and creating with a bigger purpose, and to have a deeper meaning in the things I create. Each day I spend time trying to either get inspiration, or to make something better than I have before. I hope to continually be able to learn and grow as an artist but also as a person, and to be able to inspire others as I do so.
