A Slideshow lecture on Navajo Textiles:  One Hundred Years of Southwest History – The Fred Harvey Co. and The Hearst Collection (1830 – 1930) and show and tell with pieces of Philip’s extraordinary collection.

Philip Garaway will present a slide show and lecture on one hundred years of Southwest history. He will discuss the historical chronology of Navajo textiles, the influence of the railroad and the Fred Harvey Company to the opening of the American West. He will then talk about William Randolph Hearst’s passion for collecting rare Native American art in the early 20th century. There is a long list of colourful Western characters including Lorenzo Hubbell, Herman Schweitzer, and Mary Jane Colter whose lives and interest helped influence an awareness of Native American art and culture to the American public.

For the past 43 years Philip has bought, sold and appraised Native American art. In 1983 he opened the Native American Art Gallery in Venice, California. He developed a national as well as an international clientele. He has lectured at numerous museums and schools around the country including the Autry National Center, the Southwest Museum, the Santa Monica Heritage Museum, UCLA and the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson, Wyoming.
